PRIVACY POLICY
Your dictation stays on your Mac.
Take Dictation processes your dictation audio and transcript on your device. It does not need an account or a cloud model to turn your speech into writing.
What stays private
Your dictation audio and transcript stay on your Mac. We do not receive them, and we do not send them anywhere for transcription, cleanup, training, or advertising.
What can connect
The direct-download app may check a signed update feed so it can tell you when a new version is available. That check carries version information, not your dictation content.
No account needed
Everyday dictation asks you to sign in to nothing. There is no profile, no cloud sync, and no way for us to build a picture of how you use it.
No advertising, no selling
We do not sell or share personal information, we do not run advertising trackers, and we do not build profiles for marketing.
Who this policy is from
Take Dictation is made and published by Shifted Music LLC. This policy covers the Take Dictation app for macOS and the takedictation.com website. Questions go through our support form.
What the app handles on your Mac
Dictation audio and transcripts. Captured, transcribed, and cleaned up on your Mac. They are not transmitted to us, and we hold no server-side copy of them, so there is nothing for us to hand over, lose, or be breached out of.
Your settings and vocabulary. Preferences and the words you teach the app are stored locally on your Mac.
Update checks. The direct-download app contacts our signed update feed to learn whether a newer version exists. This request carries ordinary technical information such as the app version and your IP address, which is inherent to any internet request. It does not carry your dictation.
What we receive when you buy
Purchases are processed by Paddle.com Market Ltd (“Paddle”), our merchant of record. You give your payment details to Paddle, not to us. We never see or store your full card number.
From a completed purchase we receive the information needed to sell you software and support it: your email address, your name if you provided one, your order and licence details, and the country and tax information Paddle needs to handle sales tax or VAT. We use it to deliver your licence key, provide support, process refunds, and keep the financial records the law requires.
Paddle handles your payment information under its own privacy policy as an independent controller of that data.
Our legal grounds for using it
If you are in the UK, the EU, or the EEA, data-protection law requires us to name a lawful basis for each thing we do with your information. Ours are:
Performing our contract with you. Delivering your licence key, activating it, and handling your order and refunds. We cannot sell you the software without this.
Our legitimate interests. Answering your support messages, recognising recurring faults, and keeping the app secure. We have weighed this against your privacy and consider it proportionate, because it uses only the contact details you chose to give us.
Your consent. Product-news email, and nothing else. You can withdraw it at any time using the unsubscribe link in any message or by contacting us, and withdrawing it does not affect anything we sent before.
Complying with a legal obligation. Keeping purchase and tax records for the period the law requires.
Where your information goes
Shifted Music LLC is based in the United States, so if you are outside the US your information is transferred there when you buy from us. Paddle, as merchant of record, operates its own transfer safeguards for the payment data you give it, under its privacy policy.
For the limited information we receive ourselves, which is your order and contact details, we rely on the transfer protections our processors have in place and we keep the volume of it as small as we can. We do not transfer your dictation anywhere, because we never have it.
Email you choose to receive
Your licence email is transactional: you get it because you bought something, and it is not marketing. If you separately opt in to product news, we send it only until you unsubscribe, and every message carries an unsubscribe link. We do not add you to a marketing list just because you bought the app.
Support conversations
If you contact us for help, we keep that correspondence so we can follow up and recognise a recurring problem. Please do not paste anything sensitive into a support message; we do not need your dictation content to help you.
The website
takedictation.com does not set advertising cookies and does not run cross-site trackers.
Do Not Track. Some browsers send a “Do Not Track” signal. There is no common standard for responding to it, so we do not respond to it specifically. We do not track you across other websites either way, so there is nothing for the signal to switch off.
How long we keep things
Purchase and licence records are kept while your licence is valid and afterwards for as long as tax and accounting law requires. Support email is kept while it remains useful for support. Anything processed on your Mac stays on your Mac, under your control, and is removed when you remove it or uninstall the app.
Your rights
You can ask us for a copy of the personal information we hold about you, ask us to correct it, or ask us to delete it. Depending on where you live, you may also have the right to object to or restrict how we use it, or to receive it in a portable form. Ask through our support form and we will action it.
One honest limit: we cannot delete records we are legally required to retain for tax purposes, and we cannot delete anything held by Paddle as merchant of record. For those, contact Paddle directly. We also cannot delete data we never held, which is everything you have dictated.
If we get it wrong, you can complain to a regulator. In the UK or the EU/EEA you have the right to lodge a complaint with your national data-protection supervisory authority, and you can do that without asking us first. We would rather you emailed us so we can fix it, but it is your right either way.
Children
Take Dictation is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
Changes
If we change this policy we update the “Last updated” date above. Material changes will be described here rather than made quietly.
