Why Mac dictation stops after 30 seconds, and what to do
The short answer
Apple puts it plainly: “Dictation stops automatically when no speech is detected for 30 seconds.” There is no limit on how long you can dictate. It is the silence that switches it off, so a long pause to think ends the session.
How to pick up again
- Press the Microphone key, if your keyboard has one in the row of function keys.
- Use your dictation keyboard shortcut, which you can see and change in Keyboard settings.
- Or choose Edit, then Start Dictation, in the app you are writing in.
What you dictated before the pause stays where it is.
If it stops sooner than that
Check whether Voice Control is on. When it is, you dictate through Voice Control instead, and standard macOS Dictation is not available.
Check your microphone. In Keyboard settings, under Dictation, check which microphone dictation uses, and choose another if it is wrong. Apple’s troubleshooting page also suggests turning up that microphone’s input volume in Sound settings, under Input.
If you have read about a 40-second limit, that was older advice: Apple’s guides for macOS Catalina and Big Sur suggested speaking for no more than 40 seconds at a time. Since macOS Monterey, Apple says there is no length timeout, only the 30-second silence stop.
Dictating without a silence timer
Some people pause for a long time mid-thought, or find that a timer adds pressure. A dictation app that listens only while you hold a key avoids the problem: nothing switches off while you think.
Take Dictation listens while you hold the talk key and types clean text at your cursor when you let go. If holding a key is hard, set it to tap to start and tap to stop instead. See how it works.
Questions people ask
Why does Mac dictation stop after 30 seconds?
Apple’s dictation stops automatically when it hears no speech for 30 seconds. It is the silence that ends it, not the length of what you say.
Does Mac dictation work offline?
Only where it is processed on your Mac. Apple says the text below Dictation in Keyboard settings shows whether you need an internet connection, and its troubleshooting page lists a connection as something to check when dictation is not working.
Can I dictate without holding a key?
In Take Dictation, yes. Set the talk key to tap to start and tap to stop, and choose the key that is easiest for you.
